Dr Helen Mi Fang is a fellowship-trained Consultant Ophthalmologist with subspecialty expertise in surgical vitreoretinal and medical retinal conditions, myopic retinal conditions and complex cataract surgery.
She was formerly Deputy Head of the Vitreo-Retina Service at the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute, Tan Tock Seng Hospital. During her tenure, she was involved in clinical service development, patient improvement initiatives and audits aimed at optimising patient outcomes and care processes.

Medical Training & Specialist Accreditation
Dr Helen obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. As a medical student, she completed an elective at the prestigious Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore under the mentorship of Dr Shannath Merbs.
She went on to receive the Ministry of Health Training Award for Ophthalmology Residency and attained her Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2018, followed by Specialist Accreditation in 2020.
Advanced Subspecialty Training
(Local & Overseas)
She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. After completing her local vitreoretinal fellowship at NHGEI in 2022, Dr Helen pursued an overseas fellowship at the Oxford Eye Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital in 2023 through the Tan Tock Seng Hospital Training and Development Award.
There, she trained under a team of leading vitreoretinal surgeons, including Professor Robert MacLaren, Dr Paul Rosen, Dr Sher Aslam, Dr Jasmina Kapetanovic, Dr Xue Kanming, and Dr CK Patel. She gained experience in complex vitreoretinal surgery, paediatric vitreoretinal conditions, retinal genetic disorders, and robotic vitreoretinal innovations.
Research, Teaching & Professional Involvement
As an elected Executive Committee Member of the Young Ophthalmologists Chapter, Singapore Society of Ophthalmologists, Dr Helen is also an active contributor to participating and organising events for the young ophthalmologists locally and internationally. At the national level, Dr Helen is actively involved in community eye health programmes and public awareness talks, as well as professional education for residents, optometrists, and general practitioners.
She is active in volunteer work to improve and benefit the eye health of patients not just in Singapore, but also overseas in countries such as India and China. In 2024, she was part of a team of visiting international consultant ophthalmologists in the Lifeline Express Program Development to provide a 5-day intensive surgical and academic teaching to the specialists at the Department of Ophthalmology at Linfen Yaodu District Eye Hospital.
Clinical Focus & Approach to Care
Her clinical interests include surgical vitreo-retinal diseases, medical retinal conditions such as diabetic eye disease and aged related macular degeneration, myopic retinal conditions, complex cataract surgery and general ophthalmology. Dr Helen believes firmly in the concept of optimising and preserving vision and embraces a holistic approach with the eventual aim to improve her patients’ quality of life.
In her free time, Dr Helen enjoys running, physical fitness and functional training. She regularly participates in competitions such as Hyrox and running events such as half marathons. She advocates an active lifestyle and firmly believes regular exercise is a foundation to healthy living.
Dr Helen Mi Fang now practises at Claris Eye Centre, located at Paragon Medical Centre, where she continues her commitment to delivering comprehensive and patient-oriented eye care.
