Children’s Eye Screening
Good vision plays an important role in a child’s learning, development and daily activities. Some eye conditions in children, such as refractive errors, squints (strabismus) or lazy eye (amblyopia), may not always be obvious in the early stages.
In Singapore, myopia is highly prevalent, with studies showing that approximately 65% of children are myopic by the end of primary school, and up to 80% of young adults are affected. Children may not recognise or communicate vision problems, and symptoms can sometimes be subtle.
Early detection through appropriate eye screening allows timely management and may help support visual development. This screening package is designed for children aged 6 to 18 years to assess vision, eye alignment and overall eye health.
At Claris Eye Centre, paediatric eye screening is conducted using a structured approach, with findings reviewed by an ophthalmologist.

Consultation with Ophthalmologist
A clinical consultation to review your child’s vision, symptoms (if any) and relevant history. Findings from the screening tests are explained, with recommendations provided.
Visual Acuity (Distance and Near)
Assessment of how clearly your child can see at both distance and near, helping detect refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Ocular Motility and Fixation Check
Assesses eye alignment, coordination, and tracking ability.
Stereopsis (3D vision) Test
Evaluates depth perception and binocular vision.
Ishihara Colour Vision Test
Screens for colour vision deficiencies, which may affect learning and daily activities.
Auto-Refraction
An automated measurement of refractive error to provide an initial estimate of your child’s spectacle prescription.
Cycloplegic Refraction
Cycloplegic refraction involves the use of medicated eye drops to temporarily relax the eye’s focusing ability.
This test is particularly important in children as it:
- Provides a more accurate measurement of refractive error
- Helps detect hidden hyperopia (long-sightedness)
- Supports appropriate prescription of glasses
Temporary blurred near vision and light sensitivity may occur for a few hours after the test. It may be helpful to bring sunglasses or a cap for your child.
Tonometry (Eye Pressure)
Measurement of intraocular pressure to assess for conditions such as glaucoma, where clinically indicated.
Slit Lamp Examination
A detailed examination of the front structures of the eye, including the cornea, lens and eyelids. This helps detect ocular surface conditions and early lens changes.
Red Reflex Examination
This test evaluates the clarity of the visual pathway and helps screen for abnormalities within the eye. It is useful in detecting conditions that may affect visual development.
Fundus Examination
Evaluates the back of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve.
*Fees include consultation and the tests listed above. Additional tests or treatments, if required, will be advised separately.
Conditions This Screening May Help Detect
A children’s eye screening may help identify:
- Refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism)
- Amblyopia (lazy eye)
- Reduced stereoscopic vision
- Early eye health issues affecting the retina or optic nerve
- Colour vision deficiency
- Allergic eye disease
Early detection allows timely intervention and appropriate management.
Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Check
Parents may consider an eye assessment if a child shows:
- Squinting or closing one eye
- Sitting very close to screens or books
- Frequent eye rubbing
- Complaints of blurred vision or headaches
- Difficulty concentrating or reading
- Eyes that appear misaligned
Even in the absence of symptoms, routine screening may be helpful.
